A Song of Loneliness: Women Characters in Of Mice and Men and “Chrysanthemums”

Abstract


Women characters aren't the main focus of John Steinbeck and his works. Yet, this paper, through the analysis of the women characters in Of Mice and Men and “Chrysanthemums”, is attempting to explore the loneliness and helplessness of the soul of the women during their process of pursuing their dreams that crashed in face of men's absolute power in the society.

Résumé Les personnages féminins n’occupent qu’une petite place dans l’oeuvre de John Steinbeck. Poutant, cet article s’efforce d’étudier, par l’analyse des figures féminines dans Des souris et des hommes et Chrysanthème, la faiblesse et la solitude au fond de l’âme des femmes, qui se situent dans une position défavorable et n’arrivent pas à se libérer des restrictions, dans la lutte contre les hommmes et le processus de la poursuite de leurs rêves qui s’anéantissent en face du pouvoir absolu des hommes.

摘要 女性人物在斯坦貝克的作品中只佔有極小的分量,而本文將通過對《人鼠之間》和《菊》這兩部作品裏的女性人物的分析,來探討當時女性,在與男性的對抗中,在追求自己的夢想,卻由於男性的絕對權力,處於弱勢的女性無法掙脫束縛,夢想破碎,進而幻滅的過程中,所表現出來的靈魂深處的無力與孤獨。
